Proximity

 

Role :

Head Programmer/Game Designer/Pixel Artist

 

Description :

Proximity is a 2.5D Coop puzzle game. Chosen as favorite by one of the jury teams at the Global Game Jam 2015, the enhanced version won the gameplay award at the Montreal Independent Game Festival.

 

Tasks :

Programming:

  • Manage the work of two other programmers on the project and give them precise tasks.

  • Design and code the game systems (movements, collisions, distance mechanic).

  • Code and organize all the interactive elements with one abstract ancestor class to make them all inherit Activate and Deactivate functions.

  • Created tools for designers.

  • Developed modular scripts to create new interactive elements efficiently (deals damage, moves in patterns...).

Design :

  • Build main mechanic around a theme

  • Design puzzle ingredients and adapt their functionality to the needs of the experience.
     

Important note : 
Working on proximity and developing every single ingredient made me realize that a game designer with programming skills has a powerful insight on the mechanical aspect of gameplay elements. Making him a good asset for finding re-usability cases and predicting design breaks.
